Once again, we made zippered bags for the middle and high schools for all seven districts in Spartanburg County, 31 schools. The Family Resource Center of Boiling Springs donated feminine hygiene products to go in each bag. The school nurses are so appreciative of the donation and the girls love the bags. Such an easy way to give to our community!
Here are written instructions and a video demonstrating how to make these bags:
1. Cut two pieces of fabric and one piece of batting to either 9 x 11 or 8 x 10 inches. Place the batting between the two layers of fabric and quilt as desired.
2. Determine which fabric will be the exterior of the bag and place it face up.
3. Place your zipper tape face down along one short edge of the fabric. Be sure the teeth are away from the edge of the fabric. Sew the zipper tape on with a zipper foot. Trim excess fabric next to the zipper. To finish the edge, fold the zipper back and top stitch on the exterior side of the bag.
4. Turn the fabric right sides together so the other side of the zipper tape aligns with the other short edge. Zipper teeth should again be away from the edge of the fabric. Sew the zipper tape on, trim any excess fabric next to the zipper, and then fold it back and top stitch as we did for the previous side.
5. Turn bag inside out, being sure to leave the zipper partially open. Adjust the bag so that the zipper is approximately one inch from the top and sew down each of the two sides of the bag, backstitching at each corner. Cut away excess zipper tape. Trim extra bulk from corners, being careful not to cut into the seam. Trim any remaining loose threads, and turn the bag right side out. Add ribbon to the zipper pull if desired.
